A good photo makes the difference

  • Look straight at the camera, with your head level.
  • Use even daylight, without strong side shadows.
  • Keep your face visible. Remove glasses and avoid filters.
  • Use a recent photo with just one face and a neutral expression.

What is a canthal tilt test?

Canthal tilt is the direction of the line from the inner corner of an eye to the outer corner. A canthal tilt test measures that line against your face's horizontal: it is positive when the outer corner sits higher, neutral when level and negative when lower.

Measure canthal tilt from the corners, not the eyeliner

Eyeliner wings, lashes and brows can suggest an upward line without moving the real corners. Check the dots on your result before you read the angle, and retake if one sits on makeup.

What a canthal tilt calculator covers

It measures the corner line only. Eye opening, lid coverage, brows and head position also shape the eye area, so the angle is one reading, not a full eye assessment.

Map your eyebrows

Positive, neutral and negative canthal tilt

Follow the line from the inner corner toward the temple. The diagrams show whether it rises, stays level or falls; they illustrate direction only.

Positive tilt

The outer corner is above the inner corner, so the signed angle is positive.

Approximately level

The two corners are level with the reference, so the angle is near zero.

Negative tilt

The outer corner is below the inner corner, so the signed angle is negative.

The diagram draws one eye schematically. For the opposite eye, the outward direction reverses; the meaning of a positive angle stays the same.

Why use our canthal tilt test?

You get an angle for each eye with the exact points shown, so you can see what the canthal tilt test measured.

How we handle photos

Positive or negative canthal tilt, measured per eye

A line fitted through five midline points sets the face horizontal. Each eye's inner-to-outer vector is projected onto it, rounded to 0.1°, then averaged.

θ = atan2(rise, outward run) × 180 / πCheck your face symmetry
Inspect the landmark choices

MediaPipe indices: fitted midline 10, 151, 6, 2 and 152; subject-right inner 133 and outer 33; subject-left inner 362 and outer 263. Side names assume an unmirrored front view. Missing or non-finite points, an unstable midline or insufficient corner pixels prevent a result. This is photo geometry, not a clinical protocol.

How the canthal tilt test calculates the angle

A face-landmark model locates points in the decoded image. The canthal tilt calculator then uses deterministic geometry: no language model chooses your angles. The same landmark coordinates and image dimensions produce the same values. Coordinates are converted into image pixels before measurement so a rectangular photo does not distort the angle.

A fitted midline defines the reference

Five landmarks along the middle of the face are fitted with a total-least-squares line. Its downward direction runs from the forehead toward the chin. A perpendicular axis provides the face horizontal. This removes image roll from the angle calculation. Turning toward one side or changing chin height still changes the two-dimensional view.

Project the inner-to-outer line

For each eye, the inner-to-outer vector is projected onto the horizontal and upward axes. The outward sign reverses between eyes. Each angle is rounded to 0.1°. The mean is calculated from unrounded eyes before its own rounding; the absolute difference is calculated from the rounded side readings. The result includes the two disclosed reference-index formulas.

What changes a canthal tilt test photo estimate?
Roll correction has limits

The five-point fitted line removes rotation within the image plane. A separate four-point depth reference uses both cheeks, forehead and chin. When enough face pixels make that reference usable, pitch outside ±5° or yaw outside ±10° adds a caution instead of discarding the visible 2-D eye-corner result; pitch above 3° absolute also receives a caution. If the reference is unavailable, the angle remains visible under the normal image checks. These thresholds and the 0.7° pitch offset are computational references, not clinical calibration.

Compare with the same conditions

A small change between photos may come from landmark placement, lighting or expression. Compare several clear images taken under similar conditions before attaching meaning to a decimal difference. The canthal tilt calculator has no validated accuracy percentage and no private population dataset for ranking your result. Your saved image records only the lines estimated in that photo.

How to use it in 3 steps

  1. Prepare a clear front view

Hold the camera at eye height, look straight in with both eye corners visible and keep the light even. Upload a JPEG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photo, or take one with your camera.

Check your pose in the true mirror
  2. Check the detected canthal tilt lines

Start the canthal tilt test and inspect the four corner points and reference axes. Toggle the overlay to see your eyes clearly; retake if a point misses the corner.

    Find your face shape
  3. Read both sides before the average

Compare the right and left angles, then the average and the difference. Download the annotated photo, and retest under the same conditions before trusting small changes.

Canthal tilt test FAQ

What is canthal tilt?

Canthal tilt is the angle of the line from your inner eye corner to your outer corner, measured against your face's horizontal.

What is a negative canthal tilt?

A negative canthal tilt means your outer eye corner sits lower than the inner corner, so the line slopes down toward the temple.

Which is better negative or positive canthal tilt?

Neither is better. A slight positive tilt is often called attractive online, but many striking faces have neutral or negative tilt. This canthal tilt test does not rate looks.

How to get positive canthal tilt?

The bony eye corners do not change with exercises. Makeup, brow shaping and lash styling can change how the eye area looks without changing the measured angle.

How to measure canthal tilt?

Take a straight-on photo at eye level and run this canthal tilt test. It places the four eye corners and measures each eye against a fitted face horizontal.

Can you change your canthal tilt?

It can shift slowly with growth, ageing and changes in the soft tissue around the eyes. Rapid change needs a clinician's assessment.

What is a positive canthal tilt?

A positive canthal tilt means the outer corner sits higher than the inner corner, so the line rises toward the temple.

How much does canthal tilt surgery cost?

Costs vary widely by country and surgeon. Canthoplasty is a medical procedure with risks; discuss it with a board-certified surgeon. This tool does not recommend surgery.

How rare is positive canthal tilt?

Slight positive and neutral tilts are both common, and the share varies between populations. Your result is a measurement, not a ranking.

What causes negative canthal tilt?

Mostly inherited bone and soft-tissue structure. Age-related laxity can lower the outer corner; tiredness and expression change it only in photos.

What is neutral canthal tilt?

A neutral canthal tilt means both eye corners sit at about the same height, so the line is close to level.

Is there a canthal tilt test app?

You do not need an app. This canthal tilt test runs in your phone or desktop browser and analyses the photo on your device.

Is this canthal tilt test free online?

Yes. The measurement, both angles and the annotated download are free; only the optional full face report is paid.

What do positive, neutral and negative canthal tilt look like?

See the three diagrams above: the line rises toward the temple for positive, stays level for neutral and falls for negative.

Why are my left and right canthal tilt different?

Small differences between eyes are normal. A slight head roll also lifts one corner, so check the reference line before comparing sides.

Does the canthal tilt test upload my photo?

No. Landmark detection runs in your browser and the free result stays on your device. A paid report asks for separate consent before any upload.

Why does my canthal tilt change between photos?

Head tilt, camera height, expression and lens distance move the corner points. Compare photos taken in the same conditions.
